Desc: Sanskara: Directed by Christopher Anthony Din Chong. With Damian Archie, Che Rodriguez, Ruby Parris. In Port-of-Spain, the Black Rose crime family controls the majority of nefarious and deviant activities in the city. Anyone that crosses the Black Rose, or its ruthless matriarch Big Momma Boss Lady, is killed. A street urchin - the unnamed Narrator of this film - desires a normal life, a loving family and a means of escape from the dangerous streets of Port-of-Spain. One night, after being lured into a car by a member of the Black Rose, the Narrator is rescued by a man wielding a large 3-line. This man (who the Narrator later calls "Dad"), along with his significant other ("Mom"), adopts the Narrator into their household. Mom is a housewife who spends her time taking care of the Narrator, while Dad works outdoors as a coconut vendor. However, the Narrator quickly learns that Mom and Dad are on a revenge killing spree against the Black Rose. The Narrator gradually develops a bond with his surrogate parents. However, he becomes more aware of Mom's erratic behaviour and addiction to cocaine. After a few months, the Narrator is enrolled into a private school, where he falls for a young female student. She is the daughter of a vicious Black Rose enforcer named Matthew, who is currently occupying a safe house in Curepe. Mom goes off on her own to the safe house, murders Matthew and kidnaps his daughter. Big Momma, distraught over the death of her son and her granddaughter's kidnapping, hires a corrupt police detective (Big Momma's sole confidant in the police department) to find the responsible persons. Dad argues with Mom over her irrational decision to kidnap Matthew's daughter and decides to return the girl to Big Momma, much to Mom's dissatisfaction. Mom, fearing a reprisal from the Black Rose family, starts packing her belongings, and encourages the Narrator to do the same. As Mom heads to the door to exit the house, she is hit in the face by a gun butt. Meanwhile, Dad leaves Matthew's daughter in front of her grandmother's home, and drives away in his van. Upon arrival to his home, Dad is attacked by an intruder hiding in the kitchen. After stabbing the intruder with his 3-line, Dad searches the house for Mom and the Narrator. Instead, he finds their suitcases packed. He surmises that they have been taken by Big Momma. Dad packs his belongings and exits the house. While packing the van, Dad is greeted by the corrupt police detective. In a flashback, it is revealed that the detective, a former Black Rose bodyguard, was obstructed by Dad from killing Mom years ago. Aware of Dad's affinity for Mom, and his urgency to rescue her from Big Momma, the detective informs Dad that he will hold off the police for as long as possible. Dad storms Big Momma's house, but is overpowered by her bodyguards. He is dragged into the living room, where the Narrator and Mom, both bound by rope, are being brutally interrogated by Big Momma. The Narrator uses a pocket knife, hidden in his pants, to cut the rope binding his hands. He then hurls the knife at one of the bodyguards. The bodyguard runs off with the knife embedded in his eye, while Big Momma grabs her granddaughter from her bedroom and attempts to hide. Mom enters the laundry room and discovers Big Momma hiding there. Mom drowns Big Momma in a sink full of water and slits her throat with a 3-line. Mom then grabs Big Momma's granddaughter by her hair and drags her into the kitchen. With a butcher's knife in hand, Mom threatens to kill every last member of Big Momma's family. The Narrator, already in the kitchen, grabs a knife and stabs Mom in the back. The Narrator and a badly-injured Dad are subsequently held by the police. In the police station, the Narrator is handcuffed to a table in the interrogation room. The corrupt police detective enters and as he exits the room, leaves behind a small stack of files and a key to the Narrator's restraints. He returns after a few minutes and with a smile on his face he notices that the Narrator has already escaped. Three months later, the Narrator returns to his old home and fills a bag with money stolen from the Black Rose family, before entering a taxi. An epilogue shows Dad being sentenced to death by hanging, immediately sparking a public outcry.
